HFM engages in sophisticated legal work at the cutting edge of the profession. Yet the firm traces its storied roots back to Azro E. Cheney in 1904. Cheney was joined in 1910 by Prince A. Hawkins, Sr., when he and his partners moved from Boulder, Colorado to Reno, Nevada. The mines of Colorado were nearing exhaustion, so the firm sent one of its partners to tour the west. He selected Reno as being most like Boulder, and the firm was moved to Reno.
At that time there were no paved streets nor automobiles, but Reno was the only city between Sacramento and Salt Lake, and Reno was then a prosperous mercantile center serving Nevada ranches, mines, and other businesses.
Since those early years, HFM has grown. Prince A. Hawkins, Jr., joined the firm in 1943, followed by George K. Folsom and Gordon R. Muir in 1988. Then, as now, the firm engaged in a general civil practice, but concentration has shifted from water and mining law, to trusts, estates, estate litigation, finance, and taxation. Members of the firm belong to national and local organizations focusing on trusts and estates, trust and estate litigation, and gift and estate taxation. As we say, with experience comes vision.
Established in 1910 here in Northern Nevada, HFM celebrates over 100 years of independent law practice and continues playing a significant role in shaping history.
